Ken Griffey Jr. Trading Cards: A Complete Collector's Guide
Everything about Ken Griffey Jr. trading cards in one place — his 1989 rookies, father-son cards, 1990s inserts, Mariners and Reds eras, autographs and grading — with live eBay listings for every card family that matters.
Find these cards on eBay
The cards on this list trade on eBay, not Amazon — these open live listings for each one. Buy graded (PSA or SGC) for anything above four figures.
If you’ve searched for Ken Griffey Jr. trading cards, this is the page that maps the whole thing out. Griffey — “The Kid”, the #1 overall pick in the 1987 draft, a Mariners icon from 1989 to 1999 and again in 2009–2010, a Cincinnati Red from 2000 to 2008 and briefly a White Sox player in 2008 — finished with 630 home runs, 13 All-Star selections, 10 Gold Gloves and the 1997 AL MVP, and entered the Hall of Fame in 2016 with 99.32% of the vote. He is also one of the most collected players in hobby history, and his catalogue is enormous. This guide sorts it into the families that matter, with a live eBay rail for each.
We don’t quote dollar figures anywhere on this site — prices move constantly, and the only honest number is what a card has recently sold for. The eBay rails above and throughout show exactly that.
The cards that matter most
If you only remember four things, remember these:
- 1989 Upper Deck #1 — the first card in Upper Deck’s debut set, labelled “Star Rookie”, and the defining card of its era.
- The other five 1989 rookies — Bowman #220, Donruss #33 Rated Rookie, Topps Traded #41T, and Fleer #548 and Score Traded #100T.
- Tiffany and Glossy versions — scarcer glossy editions of his Bowman, Topps Traded and Fleer rookies. See the Tiffany and oddball guide.
- The father-son cards — starting with the 1989 Bowman #259 he shares with Ken Griffey Sr. See Griffey father-son cards.

His rookie cards
“Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card” points to a specific group: his six 1989 first-year cards from the major sets. There’s no RC logo on any of them — the league’s rookie logo came much later — so rookie status comes from the year and the set. Everything about telling them apart, and which to buy first, is in the rookie cards guide.
The eras: Mariners, Reds, and back
His cards split cleanly by uniform. The Mariners years (1989–1999) are the heart of his market: the rookies, the MVP season, the peak-hobby inserts of the mid-1990s. The Reds years (2000–2008) produced a deep run of cards from a later, different hobby — and the brief White Sox stint in 2008 and his return to Seattle (2009–2010) add short, collectable chapters. See Mariners vs Reds-era cards for how the eras trade, and the year-by-year guide for the full timeline.
Inserts, relics and autographs
Griffey played through the decade when inserts took over the hobby, so beyond base cards his catalogue is full of die-cuts, foil, refractors and other chase cards. Later came game-used relic cards and certified autographs:
- Ken Griffey Jr. insert cards — the 1990s chase cards and how to assess them.
- Ken Griffey Jr. relic cards — jersey, bat and patch cards.
- Ken Griffey Jr. autographs — certified autos vs authenticated signatures, and how to avoid fakes.
What they’re worth, and how to check
There’s no book price that stays true — a Griffey card is worth what the last identical one sold for. Match the exact year, set, card number, version and grade, then read sold listings. The Ken Griffey Jr. card value checker opens that sold-listings search for you, and how to price a Griffey card explains the method.
Grading: raw vs slabbed
Grade is the single biggest multiplier on a Griffey card. Because his late-1980s and early-1990s cards were printed in such large numbers, raw copies are common and top-grade copies are not. Grading only makes sense when the gap beats the fee and the card can realistically reach a top grade — the PSA 10 vs raw guide and the grading ROI calculator walk the decision.
How to buy safely
- Buy the exact card, not the description. Match the year, set and card number in the listing photos.
- Read sold listings, not asking prices.
- Buy high-dollar cards already graded and check the certification number with the grading company.
- Be wary of famous cards sold raw at high prices. The Upper Deck #1 in particular attracts counterfeits.
- Protect what you buy. Sleeve and top-load every card worth keeping.
