Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Tiffany, Glossy & Oddball Cards — Beyond the Big Rookies
Every 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. card beyond his main rookies: Bowman and Topps Traded Tiffany, Fleer Glossy, Donruss The Rookies, Baseball's Best, Score Young Superstars, Scoremasters, Classic Travel and Mother's Cookies — what each is, how to tell them apart, and live eBay listings.

The cards on this list trade on eBay, not Amazon — these open live listings for each one. Buy graded (PSA or SGC) for anything above four figures.
Ken Griffey Jr.’s rookie year produced far more than the six cards most collectors can name. Around those main rookies sits a whole layer of premium glossy versions, boxed sets and regional oddballs — cards that trade less often, are often misidentified, and reward collectors who know exactly what they are looking at. This page walks through each one, with card numbers confirmed against at least two published checklists.
The premium versions: Tiffany and Glossy
Three of his 1989 rookies also exist in premium glossy versions. The two Tiffany cards come from Topps-made collector’s editions sold only as complete factory sets:
- 1989 Bowman Tiffany #220 — the Tiffany version of his 1989 Bowman rookie.
- 1989 Topps Traded Tiffany #41T — the Tiffany version of his 1989 Topps Traded rookie.
- 1989 Fleer Glossy #548 — the glossy version of his 1989 Fleer rookie (see the Fleer and Score Traded rookies guide).
“Tiffany” is the collector nickname for the Topps-made collector’s editions. Compared with the regular cards, they have a glossy front and white card stock instead of the regular grey. The same card number, design and photo make them easy to confuse in listings, so check the back and the finish, and buy high-end copies already graded with the variant named on the label.
There is also a 1989 Bowman Tiffany #259 — the Tiffany version of his father-son card with Ken Griffey Sr. (see father-son cards).
The boxed sets
Several 1989 Griffey cards came from boxed sets sold complete rather than in packs:
- 1989 Donruss The Rookies #3 — Donruss’s year-end rookies set, separate from his base Donruss #33 Rated Rookie.
- 1989 Donruss Baseball’s Best #192 — a boxed set of the season’s top players.
- 1989 Score Young Superstars Series II #18 — Score’s young-stars boxed set.
- 1989 Scoremasters #30 — another Score boxed set.
These are genuine 1989 Griffey cards from major manufacturers. They trade less often than his main rookies, so expect thinner sold histories when you research them.
The regional and specialty issues
- 1989 Classic Travel Update I #131 (orange) and Update II #193 (purple) — Classic’s 1989 update issues; collectors refer to them by their border colours.
- 1989 Mother’s Cookies Mariners — a Mariners team issue. We list it without a card number because we could confirm the number in only one published checklist.
- 1989 Topps Heads Up Test — a rare test issue that some Griffey checklists include; it trades rarely.
Sources: card numbers agreed by Old Sports Cards, CGC and Baseball Almanac. Tiffany construction: Cardlines and Blowout Cards.
Why collectors chase them
- Completeness. A full 1989 Griffey run — main rookies, Tiffany versions, boxed sets and oddballs — is a classic collecting goal, and it tells the story of how many companies wanted him in their checklist in his first season.
- Scarcity relative to the main rookies. The Tiffany versions were sold only in complete factory sets rather than in packs, which is why they sit above the regular versions in collector interest.
- Overlooked value. Boxed-set and regional cards attract fewer collectors, so patient buyers can find them without much competition.
Buying tips
- Verify the variant. Regular vs Tiffany vs Glossy is the most common mislabel in this corner of his market. White stock and a glossy front are the giveaways.
- Confirm the card number. Many 1989 Griffey cards share a similar look; the number on the back settles it.
- Buy premium variants graded. For Tiffany and Glossy cards especially, a slab naming the variant removes the guesswork. Our grading guide covers the method.
- Price from sold listings. The Ken Griffey Jr. card value checker opens eBay’s sold-listings filter for the exact card. Sold comps, never asking prices.
